Chef and Linode - How to create base image for chef on linode? -


my team has become increasingly dissatisfied our current hosting provider, rackspace, , researching alternative providers. chief technology officer go linode, , busy setting base box future use on linode.

i have questions workflow on linode. how create own base image on linode? using opscode chef deploy , maintain our servers, , need base image deploy chef to. base image has administrative user set up, ruby installed, gem chef gem, , basic ssh configuration. rackspace allowed me set base server , save image reused later. there way on linode? looks have backup service additional $$$ , not sure if fulfills needs. attempting save disk image via ssh described in linode's documentation, far, process time consuming.

any advice appreciated. cheers.

i recommend using packer this. can still use chef recipes build image , package packer. have best of both worlds.
